The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), is a men’s professional basketball league in the Philippines composed of 10 company-branded franchised teams. It is the first and oldest professional basketball league in Asia and the second oldest in the world after the NBA. It is known as the first and the oldest professional basketball league in Asia. PBA is currently applying the rules of FIBA and National Basketball Association NBA.

From 1975-2003, a season was usually composed of three conferences. The Philippine Basketball Association conferences were named All Filipino Cup, Commissioner’s Cup, and Governors Cup, usually ending in a best-of-7 Finals series match wherein the winner takes the Conference Cup. If the same team wins all of the conferences, the team is said to be the “Grand Slam” champion.

This year the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) 36th season features the Governor’s Cup laden with foreign imports to spice up the heating basketball action in the hardcourt. Ten PBA teams will compete against each other to win the Governor’s Cup trophy. In this 36th season of PBA Governor’s cup San Miguel Corporation announced that they will rename the San Miguel Beermen as the Petron Blaze Boosters. B-Meg Derby Ace Llamados shorten their name into B-Meg Llamados. PBA announced that TV5 will become the new TV coveror of the PBA for the next five years.

This was made by Commissioner Chito Salud on July 8,2011 during the PBA Board of Governors meeting. TV5 will guaranteed the league P700 million in cash,P150 million for marketing and promotions, and P115 million worth of ad spots up to 2016. TV5 will also be handling the radio coverage of the PBA as well. Barako Bull has sold their franchise to Linaheim Corp. following approval of the sale by the PBA Board of Governors on July 8,2011, thus making the PBA to have 10 teams next season.

Teams will have a height limitation handicapping system on Imports based on the performances of the teams in the first two conferences.

  • Single round robin for 10 teams, only top 6 will advance to playoffs
  • Top 6 teams will have another single round robin, records from eliminations will be carried over
  • A team which wins four of five games in the second round (regardless of their overall record) gets automatic playoff crack at a finals berth.
  • Semifinals and Finals will be best-of-seven
